Touchdown

Humans had tried for decades to find life other than that upon earth. It was often viewed as a near statistical impossibility that there ISN’T life elsewhere throughout the universe. However, no matter how intense the search, no matter how many techniques we had tried, all efforts had proven to be in vain. That was until the 23rd of April, 2028.

It began as any other day; flooded with mediocrity and drenched in sorrow. Then the sky went dark. Cast upon the earth was a shadow of a form of eldritch splendour, which filled the arteries of all witnesses with ichor of golden shine. A thundering whisper began a solemn march into the minds of all, and insanity struck the mentally weak and the emotionally fragile. Those whose sanity was drained were given the honour of participation in the rapture. Within an instant, those marked for rapture vanished without a trace. Then the divine being dissipated into the aether of the eternal void of space. Two minutes had passed.

Mankind had always expected first contact to be a momentous occasion for science and reasoning. It turned out to be its unravelling.
